This decimated government owned monopoly fone companies and was a complete blessing to the world. In an analogous way today SIP based service provider are aiming for users of the incumbent local exchange carriers (eg Verizon).

In New York, Verizon charges businesses $40 per line. With our SIP platform you can charge $10 or $20 per line and that is pure profit before the customer even makes one fone call.

In addition, traditional pbx's are set up as x trunks by y stations, with x usually being much less than y, rarely does one have a square configuration with the number of trunks = to the number of stations. With SIP service by definition every station is also a trunk, so you can sell your customers more lines than the incumbent fone company and still be much cheaper.
